Rugby, ND - Prairie Village Museum

Cook Car

Electric hair drying equipment

We stopped in Rugby, ND for a few days and we took in the Prairie Village Museum. It is quite an interesting place. In the above pics are a few of the more interesting things. The cook car was a kitchen that moved with the custom harvesters when they used thrashing machines. Two women cooked for 15 to 20 men. The women got started at 3 to 4 AM and made fresh bread and pies daily. They were responsible for breakfast, mid morning sandwiches, lunch, mid-afternoon sandwiches and dinner. No one knows what they were paid, but it was suggested that they were the most overworked underpaid people on the harvest.
This hair drying display shows individual curlers that have electric wires going to them to dry the hair. It looks scary to me. I wonder how many people were shocked or killed by this thing?
The tallest man story is about a man who lived in this area. He traveled with the circus and eventually became the tallest lawyer ever. His growth was from a malfunctioning thyroid gland (Kim thinks maybe it was the pituitary gland). Anyway, he grew real tall, OK? I had a good talk with a farmer named Joe last night at dairy Queen. It was interesting to learn about the different farming methods here.
