SS William A. Irvin

Kim and me at the wheel - kinda scary huh?

The William A. Irvin cargo ship
Kim and me (we can wear our "My Man Mitch" shirts away from Indiana because no one knows what they mean).

"Hey - snap the picture Joe, this water is freezing!" The water in Superior never gets above 52 degrees. It was very very cold!

Today we visited the William A. Irvin, a retired coal and ore carrying ship turned into a tourist attraction. It was very interesting. It is smaller than the famed Edmund Fitzgerald but still a large ship. It measures 610 feet long by 60 feet wide and has 2000 horsepower and burned 1.2 tons of coal per hour fed by an automatic stoking system while traveling a whopping 12 mph loaded. It hauled 114,000 tons.
